November musings...

Last week, as October came to an end and I anticipated the start of November with calm content, I had the pleasure of hosting a dinner party with the theme 'There's Rice at Home'

When I was younger, and like many other children obsessed with McDonald's, me and my siblings could never pass one without asking for a beloved happy meal. More often than not my mum would deny our request with a simple reminder that There's Rice at Home. You see my mum made sure to keep an endless supply of rice & stew ready should anyone need sustenance. Nowadays we call it meal prep, back then we called it boring, whilst to my mum it was efficient. As children obsessed with the possibility of other and excitement we often found ourselves longing for things presented as different to the norm and exciting, and Ronald McDonald was no exception.
With the recent state of the economy; paired with others reminiscing on their childhood anecdotes the phrase has made a timely comeback. This time around with new meanings and more layers, and whilst the obvious (and possibly most important) being a reminder to save money by being resourceful with what we have at home I can't help but also be inspired by the other metaphors it has come to represent for me. The November month sees temperatures outside drop giving us even more reason to stay inside, and with that also comes the importance of making sure we also create reasons and an atmosphere that make staying inside desirable and conducive to our overall well-being.
'There's rice at home' is not only a reminder that we have what we need at home, but also a reminder that we need to make/create/bring into existence our spiritual, mental and physical sustenance. This November my focus is on refining and/or creating practices that support my well-being. Prayer, meditation and journaling are some ways to do this.
How will you develop your your spiritual practice this November?
